Meaning of the NGJRF Plaque:

NGJRF Plaque

This presentation plaque of NGJRF has been designed to reflect the ethos of medical science in India today, combining as it does a symbol each of our ancient Indian medical wisdom and that of the ancient Greeks.

The upper part of the plaque bears the figure of Brahma, the creator of the universe according to Hindu religion and cultural faith. This is a symbolic representation of a deity who is the originator of the Knowledge and Science of life known in Sanskrit as Ayurveda, derived from two Sanskrit words i.e. Ayu meaning life and Veda meaning knowledge. This composite term is a rubric compiled by our ancient sages, the fathers of ancient medicine, to convey a broader meaning than mere medical practice, therapy or cure; it is expanded to mean the Science which pervades all Knowledge of life.

The upper part of the plaque portrays the four faced four armed Brahma seated on a lotus flower, holding in each of his four arms a kalash (flask) of amrit (ambrosia, the nectar of life), a ladle, a rosary and manuscripts of the science of life. The design is an artist's adaptation of the idol of Brahma chiselled in stone by the sculptors of the 7th century A.D. at Aihole in Karnataka State during the rule of Chalukyas.

The lower part depicts the college emblem.

The design of the plaque was prepared by Dr. S.R. Amladi - Executive Trustee of N.G.J.R.F. (former Prof. & Head - Pharmac.) and Dr. S.N. Rao.
