History:

The department of urology at Nair has been associated with stalwarts in the field of urology such as Dr. F.P. Soonawala and Dr. C.T. Patel. The first renal transplant in Mumbai was performed at Nair hospital in 1985. Endourological procedures for renal and ureteric calculi, as well as transurethral resections for prostate were first performed in Mumbai at Nair hospital. As a result a strong foundation in urology was laid down even prior to the setting up of an independent department in 1991, the same year in which the department was recognized by the MCI and students were admitted for the MCh degree in Urology. Nair hospital is the only municipal / government hospital in Maharashtra to provide a comprehensive Urodynamic facility.
