Unique Facilities: Ophthalmology

Phacoemulsification for Cataract:

Initiated in 1999, this advanced laser technology in cataract surgery is now routinely used at Nair Hospital, the only Municipal Hospital in the city to offer such services.

The technique allows for sutureless surgery and a fast recovery after cataract operations. An intraocular lens implant is usually inserted after the surgery. The department also conducts regular hand-on surgical training workshops on phacoemulsification since February 2000. Dr. (Mrs.) G.G. Murthy, Professor & Head of Dept., is the course director for these workshops.

Community Ophthalmology Services:

Mobile Ophthalmic Van is used to cater to the eye-care needs of the slum population of Mumbai. The services are unique in that no other public hospital in the city offers these mobile eye clinic facilities. The van regularly visits BMC's urban health centres at Cheetah Camp, Shivaji Nagar and Mankhurd. The outreach eye-care programmes include:

  •
  • Screening for preventable blindness and timely surgical intervention which is provided at the operation theatres of Nair Hospital.
  •
  • Regular diagnostic and surgical camps are organised with the help of NGO's like Lions International - Sight First project and Rotary Clubs for poor and needy patients.
  •
  • Coordination with National Society for Prevention of Blindness for preventing childhood blindness.

    Nair Ophthalmologist Alumni Association:

This unique association is launched with a view to pool the expertise and skill of ophthalmologists who passed out from these institutes and the present teachers and students in the interest of better patient care and ophthalmic education.
