School Mental Health Clinic (SMHC):

	First community based preventive child psychiatry service in India.
	1979 - started as a pilot project.
	1982 - developed into a full-fledged unit with Lecturer, Registrar, House officer, 2 Clinical Psychologists, and 2 Psychiatric Social Workers.
	It served as a model for other child psychiatry units in India.

Play therapy area at SMHC

SMHC Working:
Comprises of 2 teams of doctors, clinical psychologist and social worker. One team throughout the year visits schools mainly Municipal, and occasionally Private schools, to screen and manage children with mental health problems in liaison with teachers and parents.

Number of Children Examined:
Approximately 1000 children are examined by psychologists, social workers and psychiatry residents every year. Approximately 25,000 children are screened every year. Approximately 20,000 children with mental health problems have been examined and managed out of a population of 5 lakhs since its inception.

World Mental Health Week is celebrated every year from 4th to 10th October during which the several unique activities are undertaken:

	Poster exhibitions in hospitals, institutions & primary health centres
	Postgraduate quiz in psychiatry for all medical colleges in Mumbai
	Workshops & Seminars on mental health
	Educational pamphlets distributed every year to patients and their families and general public
	Mental health camps
	Mental health surveys conducted & lectures given in schools, colleges, companies, slums
	Street plays on mental health
