A skin biopsy is particularly important for patients who do not show good response to initial treatment. The department has a qualified dermatopathologist in Dr. Uday Khopkar who has taken training in this subject in USA.

Expert dermatopathology advice is available to all patients from Nair Hospital, free of cost. Such advice is also provided to patients from other private and public hospitals at a charge. For this purpose you may send a pathology slide or a skin biopsy specimen to the department on any weekday. Slides or specimens may be sent by courier.

A typewritten report along with coloured photomicrographs will be issued within a few days. For further details contact 3012023 or 3081490 ext. 560 & talk to Ms. Veena Warang or email to nairskin@vsnl.com or ukhopkar@vsnl.com.

The department is equipped with a multiheaded teaching microscope with photomicrography equipment and a high-resolution monitor that allows case discussion between doctors.

Clinicopathologic Correlation Clinic:

Dermatopathology is practiced in a patient oriented manner through the conduction of this clinic in which every patient and the biopsy slide are studied together. The clinic is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 2.30 pm - 4.30 pm. Patients may be directly referred to this clinic from private hospital for dermatopathology opinion.

Special Care Dermatology OPD:

All patients who need long-term treatment and follow up are given special attention in this clinic. Their records are entered into the computer. All patients who follow up for PUVA therapy, UVB therapy and pulse therapy are also followed up here.

STD & HIV Care Facilities:

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are a group of infections that are transmitted by sexual contact. Expert help in diagnosis and treatment of these infections is available on all OPD days. Control of STDs is a social priority as they facilitate spread of HIV infection.

Testing for HIV infection (with pre-test and post-test counseling) is available in the department for patients who are found to be at high-risk of contracting HIV infection. For those found to be infected HIV infection, a comprehensive health care facility staffed by physicians, skin & STD specialists, PSM residents and a counselor is available on Wednesdays at 10.30 am.
