History:

Skin & STDs Department was started in 1944 as an offshoot of the Dept. of Medicine. In the seventies, the Department shot into prominence under the leadership of Dr. T.K. Mehta and Dr. Leslie Marquis who served as Editors of the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology for extended periods. The spirit of 'together we progress' was inculcated in the department by Dr. Marquis and was continued later by Dr. S.S. Trasi and now by Dr. S. L. Wadhwa under whose stewardship the department has flowered to its present shape.


Teaching and Academic Activities:

The department is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences for the Postgraduate and Undergraduate education respectively. Students register every year for MD (Skin diseases) and DVD.

Patient Facilities:

Out-Patient Facilities:
For new patients it is necessary to get a Nair Hospital case paper from the Registration Counter (OPD No. 14) at the ground floor of OPD Building. Regular OPD works between 8.30 am to 12.30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays Friday & Saturdays.


Special Clinics:

Paediatric and Adolescent Dermatology OPD service:
- For children and teenagers upto 18 years
- Monday to Saturday (except Wednesday) 8:30 am to 12:30 pm

Special Care OPD:
- Monday to Saturday(except Wednesday), 9.30 am - 12.30 pm
- For patients requiring long term follow up with specialized therapy and monitoring

Diagnostic Dermatopathology Services:
- Skin biopsies are performed daily, preferably with prior appointment.
- Reporting of histopathology slides and clinicopathological correlation on every
- Tuesday 2:00 - 3:30 pm

Integrated clinic for patients with HIV infection / AIDS (in collaboration with Dept. of Medicine & Dept. of Preventive & Social Medicine):
- Wednesday 10.30 am to 12:30 pm

Genodermatoses & Difficult Pediatric Dermatoses:
- Thursday 9am - 11.00am by appointment

Pigment Clinic:
- Melasma, facial & periorbital pigmentation and other pigmentary disorders
- Friday 8.30 am onwards by appointment

Acne Clinic:
- Saturday 8.30 am onwards by appointment

Hair Disorders Clinic:
- Saturday 8.30 am onwards by appointment

Senior Citizen's OPD:
- To be started


Dermatosurgery Services:

    The department has a full fledged minor operation theater where many minor procedures are done every day.

Various surgeries routinely performed are:

Vitiligo surgeries  :  including punch grafting, suction blister grafting, local Dermabrasion.
Acne surgeries  :  like comedone extraction, subcision, cryoslush, chemical peels.
Excision and biopsy  :  of various benign swellings like appendageal tumors, tattoo excision, sebaceous cyst excision, steatocystoma multiplex excision.
Nail surgery:  :  biopsy and therapeutic
Cryosurgery  :  is done on Wednesday, for various lesions like keloids, warts, acne keloidalis nuchae, hypertrophic lichen planus
Electrosurgery  :  is done on Wednesday and Friday for warts, granuloma pyogenicum, DPN
Radiofrequency surgery  :  is done on Friday for warts on face, DPN, seborrheic keratosis, skin tags, verrucous epidermal nevus and electroepilation
