History:

A combined Pathology and Bacteriology department was established in 1946 under Dr. L. Monterio. The departments separated in 1977.

Other department heads were as follows:
Dr. Raman (1952-1961)
Dr. C.K. Deshpande (1961-1970)
Dr. S.M. Purandare (1970-1979)
Dr. S.R. Prabhu (1979-1993)
Dr. I.M. Vora (1993-1998) &
Dr. J.R. Deshpande (1998 onwards)

During Dr. Prabhu's tenure, the department acquired many automated instruments and sophisticated binocular microscopes. Dr. Vora motivated staff members for active involvement at scientific conferences. She was Treasurer, Vice-President & President of Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists (IAPM).

Cytology section was started in 1981 and was initiated and developed by Dr. J.D. Rege.


Current Activities & Services:

Routine services are available daily except on Sundays and O.P.D. holidays.
Timings: 8.30 am to 4.30 pm &
(Up to 1.00 pm) on Saturdays and Bank Holidays.

OPD-16 (Central Laboratory):
For OPD patients' blood, urineŽ stoolŽ. Malarial Parasite testing. Samples are collected between 8.30 am to 10.00 am by appointment. School Clinic children are served in the afternoon.

OPD-118 (Cytology):
Procedure - F.N.A.C. (includes U.S.G. & C.T. guided facilities). Exfoliative & Gynaecology cytology.

Haematology Section:
Samples for complete haemogram, bone marrow, bleeding time, clotting time etc. are accepted only between 8.30 am to 10.30 am except in case of emergency.

Post Mortem Section: (Room No.307-Museum) and Autopsy Room:
Performing and Reporting of autopsies and Specimen mounting.

Surgical Pathology Section: (Room No.312):
Processing and reporting surgical pathology specimens.

Biochemistry Section: (Old RMOs Qrts.Bldg.'G' 1st floor):
Biochemical investigations for all patients. Administration and quality control for Emergency Lab.

Emergency Laboratory: (Old RMOs Qrts. Bldg. 'G' 1st floor):
Basic haematology and biochemistry investigation and Arterial blood gases after routine hours till next working day.

Practical Hall: (3rd floor, College building 'D'):
For conducting undergraduate & postgraduate Practicals & Seminars.
