  •  
  • Voluntary Confidential Counselling & Testing Center (VCCTC) for Counselling & HIV testing is made available through Mumbai District AIDS control society.
       
  •  
  • Food handlers from various eating houses in Mumbai are screened regularly for communicable diseases.
       
  •  
  • CD4 / CD8 facilities are made available free of cost for patients on ART.

  •  
  • Our department plays key role in formulating guidelines for Hospital Infection Control / Solid Waste Management and implementation of the same.
  •  
  • Surveillance of Nosocomial outbreaks.


    Teaching Activity:

    Undergraduate teaching:
    Lectures are held for undergraduate (M.B.B.S., B.D.S., O.T., P.T.) students. Practical tutorials are held for undergraduate (M.B.B.S., B.D.S.) & D.M.L.T. students. Nurses teaching for nurses are also carried out by the departmental teaching staff. Over 550 students at any given time, from various faculties get the benefit of regular teaching in the department of microbiology.

    Post Graduate Teaching:
    Post-graduate seminars/Journal Review is held twice every week. Post graduates participate in Seminars, Symposium and Inter-college meetings. Microbiology Department is recognized for M.D. Microbiology, M.Sc. Microbiology by research and PhD Microbiology of Mumbai University.

  • Comparison of conventional and rapid methods for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in HIV seropositive and seronegative adults.

  • Role of Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgM antibodies of Respiratory syncytial virus IgM.

  • Study of asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy.

  • Study of etiological agents of diarrhoea in HIV seropositive and seronegative patients funded by Nair Golden Jubilee Research Foundation (NGJRF).

  • Clinicoepidemiological evaluation of neonatal infection, Nair Golden Jubilee Research Foundation (NGJRF).
  •  
  • An insight into the pathogenesis of HIV-1 with respect to co-infections in infants, Research Society.

  • Invitro susceptibility of candida species causing mucosal and systemic infections, NGJRF.

  • Phase III double blind study of Ceftobiprole Vs Vancomycin for treating skin & skin structure infections in collaboration with Skin & VD Department.

  • WHO-AMR in collaboration with Clinical Pharmacology Department.

  • National Aids Control Organization (NACO) organized Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission (PPTCT) Program: Short term Nevirapine intervention amongst HIV infected mothers to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV.

  • NACO organized Sentinel Surveillance for Antenatal mothers, IVDU & CSWs.
  •  
  • Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (DOTS): Laboratory services for Tuberculosis diagnosis.
  •  
  • Global Network Project study on 'Surveillance of neonatal sepsis: multicentric study in collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baitimore and funded by the National Institute of Child health & Development, USA.
  •  
  • Molecular mechanisms of HIV-1 pathogenesis in children [University of Arizona + International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (ICGEB) New Delhi] funded by NIH USA.
  •  
  • 'Effect of Honey on clinical isolates' sponsored by 'Khadi Village Industrial Commission - Mumbai'.
  •  
  • Study of infective chronic diarrhoea in malnourished patients and evaluation of invitro effect of selective plants as drugs, for eg. Zingiber officinale, Cyperus retundus, Cuminum cyminum.
