History:

In 1971, the department separated administratively from Physiology department and since 1981 acquired an independent status in the University Examinations. Since 1988, the department continues to progress under the leadership of Dr.(Mrs) Vijaya Haldankar. For the undergraduate courses the college is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, while for postgraduate courses it is affiliated to University of Mumbai.

Biochemistry Laboratory: Is my
colour the correct one?		     The Department of Biochemistry undertakes mainly Teaching and Research. The undergraduate students learn the subject of Biochemistry during their first year of the course, under the faculties of Medicine, Allied subjects and Dentistry : MBBS, Occupational Therapy-BOT, Physiotherapy- BPT & BDS respectively.

An orientation programme "Maitra" is organized every year for the newly admitted Ist MBBS students in collaboration with departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Psychiatry. This orientation course comprising of study skills and communication skills helps the students to cope up with studies and examination related stress.

All the staff members of the department have undergone training in "Medical Education Teaching Technology". The department offers extensive training to postgraduate Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technoilogy (DMLT) students and 1st year Nursing students in Biochemistry.

The department has permanent recognition to enroll the students for M.Sc. by papers, M.Sc. by research and Ph.D. under the faculty of Science of University of Mumbai. University of Mumbai has given recognition to 5 teachers for M.Sc. by research. Dr.(Mrs) V.A. Haldankar (Prof. & Head) is the research guide for Ph.D. in Biochemistry. The tests/investigations standardized and carried out for research projects of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students are extended to hospital patients as specialized investigations.

All the requisite laboratory facilities are available to carry out research projects for M.Sc. (by research) & Ph.D. degree courses. The department and central library is equipped with good number of latest edition of books covering all the aspects of Biochemistry and Allied subjects:
