    Radiation Oncology Centre:
Begun in 1999, the centre continued to attract increasing number of patients from all over the country. Plans are afoot for further expansion to providing comprehensive oncology services. As a step towards this, Oncology outpatients have been begun in association with the Departments of Surgery, Gynaecology and Haematology.

Mammography:
Inaugurated in February 2000, it is the first machine of this type to be installed in a public hospital in the city of Mumbai. Meant to detect early breast cancer, the facility complements plans of Nair Hospital to develop a comprehensive oncology centre. The machine is equipped with the facility of doing a stereotactic biopsy automatically from the most suspicious area and is operated by expert radiologists.

Narrow Band UVB Phototherapy Chamber:
Inaugurated in February 2000, it is the first of its type in India. Except for the UVB lights, the rest of the chamber was indigenously designed and constructed in Nair Hospital. It has added an effective and safe option in the treatment of psoriasis and vitiligo (leukoderma) particularly in older children, the aged and women of child bearing age, who cannot avail of PUVA therapy.

Childline Service:
Establishment of a child helpline for the city of Mumbai in collaboration with UNICEF was a major achievement this year for the Preventive & Social Medicine Dept. This 24-hour helpline is providing help in emergencies to thousands of street children and child labourers in the city. In the coming months, collaboration with UNICEF it is also proposed to establish the first prevention of child abuse cell in the city.

The Medicine Department has begun an Osteoporosis Clinic in August 2000 in collaboration with the Department of Gynaecology & Obstetrics & Department of Orthopaedics. The clinic will run on Tuesdays between 9.30 am to 12.30 pm on the first floor of the OPD Building.

Referral System from Peripheral Municipal Dispensaries:
In order to achieve the optimum utilisation of the services of Peripheral Municipal Dispensaries in the city and also to reduce the load of patients coming directly to a tertiary care hospital like Nair Hospital, this system has been put in place with coordination by the PSM Dept.

The Medical Education Teaching Technology Cell (METTC) has taken the task of improving the existing teaching and evaluation methods very seriously. It holds quarterly workshops for teachers focussed on changing methods of teaching or evaluation. The last in the series dealt with Framing of Multiple Choice Questions.
